Profile Information

Why are you interested in this project?
I initially set up this project as part of my MSc in education at the University of Stirling. I recently moved to Greenhill and didn't know anything about it as a community. It has a community centre so I wanted to set up a small project partly as a volunteer and partly as a research student to explore what this place is and what it means to people and whether IT might form a part of this.
What do you want to achieve?
Greenhill is very much split into two: on one hand you have a very traditional, old ex-railway village set on the periphery of Bonnybridge, right next to an ancient Roman Wall. On the other you have an area in transition, where three housing developers have moved in and created a large housing estate off Greenhill Road. What does this mean for this community at present and in the future?
Tell me a bit about yourself
Community Education Worker for Greenhill Community Resource Centre, live in Bonnybridge with my husband Andrew, who is Australian.
Have you ever been involved in community activities before?
Nope! But I do like to read about Bonnybridge, and visit the various places I should visit in order to learn about it more.
How important is community to you?
Very. I want to contribute to where I live, I think that's important, as well as helping others to know where they are living. I think if you know the history of a place and understand its significance then you will look after it more. Plus, if you know people around you that increases your social capital, your ability to feel part of somewhere, access and contribute to services, make it a better place, create a proper interactive habitat for yourself and your family instead of just a place where your house is.
What is your definition of community?
A network of support, making you feel part of something more personal. Where people understand why their community is special and will do everything they can to keep it alive.
Do you use computers much?
My computer is never off!
Do you use the Internet often?
Constantly.
Do you have a computer with Internet access at home?
Yes.
Do you think the computers and the Internet can help create a better community for us?
I definitely think it's a great way to communicate to a bigger audience and sites like this can make it more personal. I know a lot of people think the Internet is too huge and very impersonal, but if you log on you can meet all different types of people and can really feel part of a specific community, whether it is the one you physically live in, one related to interests you have, etc.
Do you prefer learning on your own or in groups?
I like both actually, but if I'm nervous about something I'll work on my own.
What do you want to achieve at the end of this project?
I want to see if a small group of people, including myself, can create a resource, or a few resources on what it means to them to live in Greenhill and what is important. I'd like other residents of this area to contribute too.
Define Greenhill
An area which is in danger of becoming a "commuter belt" but is actually a little village in its own right, with its own special history that needs to be preserved.

Join us if you live in Greenhill!

The Greenhill Project is currently in the process of creating a small resource (i.e. this one!) that reflects what Greenhill is as a place and who lives here. Anyone living in Greenhill (in Bonnybridge, near Falkirk, Scotland, that is!) can join and start to network with other community members! If you used to live here you can join too!!

Next EnviroWalkers Event: 15th July at 7pm

Our next walk will be on Wednesday 15th July, meeting at Greenhill Community Resource Centre. There are a few places we haven't been to as a collective, one of which is along Reilly Road and down the Low Pad between the Bett and Persimmon houses. The other one is up Glenyards Road and beside the old Greenhill School headmaster's house (I think that's what it was!). So we're open for suggestions as to where you'd like to go so that we can continue walking for the next month or so.

Hope to see yo… Continue

Next EnviroWalkers Event - 8th July

The next walk will take place on 8th July at 7pm, meeting at Greenhill Community Resource Centre. The theme will be the railways and we'll visit the giant (as was) railway system around Greenhill. We'll also have old maps and images to imagine it as it once was. After this walk you'll wonder how it's possible that we don't have a station now!!

Greenhill Walks Starting on 17th June 2009

Last year we held walks every Wednesday night for around eight weeks and we're going to be starting these again from Wednesday 17th June 2009 at 7pm, going to Rough Castle Roman Wall. It will be similar to our Walk + Photo series but this time called EnviroWalkers! So if you're interested, get your camera polished up! If you don't have a camera we can lend you one. We'll also be providing some historical information for the trip so you can imagine the community in previous times!

Greenhill Munitions Wagon - it's ours!!!

The brilliant and helpful person that is Andy Davies at Network Rail has managed to negotiate a good deal for us in terms of the munitions wagon at Upper Greenhill Junction. We can HAVE the wagon so long as we find somewhere for it to go! So if you know of anywhere please let the Historical Society know. We want to keep it as part of a historical artefact of the Greenhill railway past but it does have to be moved from its current spot and placed somewhere in the community.....

ALL SUGGESTIONS W… Continue
